Windows 7 is a great operating system for netbooks! Not many netbooks could run on Vista, so we saw a jump straight from XP to Windows 7 as the default netbook OS.
Windows 7 already runs fast on netbooks, but let’s say you want some more performance. The first thing you should do is turn down your visual effects. Right click Computer and go to Properties. Click Advanced system settings and click settings on the performance section. Set Windows to custom visual effects and turn everything off except for Animate controls and elements inside windows, Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing, Fade or slide menus into view, Fade or slide ToolTips into view, Fade out menu items after clicking, Show window contents while dragging, and Slide open combo boxes. Netbooks aren’t made to render great graphics and Windows 7 has some features which make it look great. By turning these settings off, your netbook will run much quicker and it will be more responsive.
Another thing you can look at to tweak is services. Some services are not needed in netbooks since they won’t ever be used (and if you ever do need to run software which requires one of these services, they can be turned on automatically). Go to the start menu and search services.msc to get to the services manager. Disable the following services (unless you use them): Block Level Backup Engine Service, Certificate Propagation, Fax Service, Homegroup Provider, Offline Files, Portable Device Enumerator Service, Software Protection, SSDP Discovery, Windows Defender, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, and Windows Search. You can also get a cheap RAM upgrade for your netbook. RAM is the cheapest way to get the greatest boost in performance on any computer, especially on netbooks with nice processors but less RAM. Look at the RAM upgrades section on TechGeeks for help finding the right RAM.
